Tables vs. CSS

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve created lots of websites in the past using the tried and tested method of creating tables and messing about with spacer images until everything seems to work. Sometimes, this has been a hugely frustrating undertaking - especially trying to get things to work across browsers.

…and then we change something, and it all falls to pieces!!!

Now, I’ve always used CSS to manage the styles across my sites, Read the whole article - Tables vs. CSS

Testing Your Websites

We all know that we should test our websites once we’ve developed them, and that we should test them in multiple different browers, but how easy is it to actually do this?  I have Firefox 3.0, IE6 and IE7 at my disposal, and I could probably install Flock and Safari, but what about SeaMonkey running under FreeBSD, or what about running on a Mac platform???  Read the whole article - Testing Your Websites

Wordpress Flaw

One of the nice features of Worpress (used for this blog) is that people can register as a user which lets themreceive notifications whenever I add new content.  Whenever this happens, I receive an email notification that they’ve registered - and as you can imagine, I like receiving emails like this.

Today though, this all changed!  Read the whole article - Wordpress Flaw

Programming Today

I read a great article today from Joel Spolsky (the author of Joel on Software) talking about the challenges facing students who learn only Java.

You can read the article yourself at http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/ThePerilsofJavaSchools.html

This made me think about how my own studies had prepared me for programming in the real world, to which I can only conclude that I was left so hopelessly un-prepared as to be frightening! ;)

Wordpress 2.5 Upgrade - Success!

Wow - that was SO EASY!

You know what it’s like with ANY upgrade - I was understandably nervous.  The reality was that it took me longer to back everything up before I started than it did to actually run the upgrade!

If anyone hit the maintenance page that’s been up for about 10 minutes - I apologise and I hope that you made it back in order to see the new site in all it’s glory! :)

In fact, the site looks just the same as it did before the upgrade on the front page (so the Semiologic theme IS in fact compatible with 2.5) it’s just the admin interface that’s changed drastically - and for the better, it seems!

As I get more familiar with the changes, I may well post some more info.  For now - now that I know that the “posting” function still works ;) - I can deactivate the maintenance page and get the site back up.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with Wordpress 2.5, or was it more challenging for you?
