However, there is one thing that absolutely makes my blood boil. It winds me up so much that I get uncharacteristically angry.  In fact, I get furious!

That thing is “incompetence”.

The thing is, in my experience, incompetence stems from one of two grounds:

1. Being lazy
2. Being an idiot

Clearly, if the person you’re dealing with is an idiot, then there’s little you can do about it other than feel sorry for them.  However, by far the most common cause of incompetence is being too lazy to do a job properly.  The “it’ll do” attitude is insinuating itself into our society like a cancer, and the visible symptom is incompetence.

“What’s this got to do with Internet Marketing?”, you might ask…

I’ve been working with a few clients lately where I’ve had cause to look up their domain registration records.  In every case, the web designer who setup the domain on behalf of my client didn’t bother to setup the registrant records correctly.  Specifically, the “owner” should be the person who’s receiving the website – even if you, as the designer, will be the technical contact and are billing the client annually for ongoing service.  If I pay you for a domain, I should be able to stop paying for maintenance, but still own the domain that I’ve paid for!

I sincerely hope that in each case there’s nothing malicious related to this.  It’s not that (as in one instance that comes to mind) the designer wants to be difficult and assert their own ownership over a domain that clearly has nothing to do with them.  Since I prefer to think more positively about people, I can only put it down to incompetence.  Which annoys me!

However, one of the most important things that I’ve learned over the years that I’ve been studying Internet Marketing is that knowing “what” to do is only a small part of the equation.  I like to break it down like this:

(WHAT + HOW) x MASSIVE ACTION = PROFOUND RESULTS

Let’s break this down:

WHAT - Knowing “What” to do is an important part of the equation.  If you’ve been around Internet Marketing for any length of time, then you’ll know that you need to do some basic things like keyword research and traffic generation, without which your online business will struggle.

HOW - Knowing “What” to do isn’t enough – you need to know “How” to do it in order to get anywhere.  We all know that getting traffic is important, but few people know the real secrets to drive a flood of traffic to their sites.  The “What” and the “How” go hand in hand to enable you to have success.

MASSIVE ACTION - This is the real key to everything.  “Action” is OK, but you’ll never be really successful just from taking a bit of action here and there.  To be truly successful, you need to take massive, constant, focused action every single day.  If you’re watching 2-3 hours of TV most days, you’re not taking massive action.  If you go out with friends 2-3 times a week, you’re not taking massive action.  This is about making sacrifices until you reach your point of success, whatever that means to you. Also, notice that we’re multiplying our knowledge by our actions, which is why this point is so important.

Having said all that, read on for my strategy for maximizing your action with minimum effort!

PROFOUND RESULTS – Did you know that the majority of marketers make an average of $10 a month online?  That’s a result – albeit a disappointingly familiar result for a lot of people, and it’s not what’s driving us to put in the massive action.  I recommend that you come up with a monthly figure that you feel would make a huge difference in your life, then double it: Now THAT’s a “Profound Result” that’s worth working towards!

All this brings me finally to the point I wanted to make!

As entrepreneurs (you do realize that you’re an entrepreneur, right?) we tend to be great at coming up with ideas and finding out “what” needs to be done and often, we even manage the “how” part, then just as we start to shuffle into mediocre action, we have the next million-dollar idea and start researching the “what’s” and the “how’s” of this one.   We end up filled with all this great knowledge but often the only action we’ve taken is to register a domain and maybe write one blog post.  Come on, admit it – I know I’m not the only person in IM with more dormant domains that I know what to do with!

The real key to achieving the massive success that we’re looking for is to recognize where our strengths lie.  I know that I’m good at coming up with ideas, producing videos and writing blog posts, but if I have to write an eBook or a series of articles, then I get bored within minutes.  I’m also not great at strategy so 6 months ago, my wife started working in the business and she’s a great strategist!

Take some time today to really think about what your strengths are, then consider where you need additional support for your weaker areas.
